Jack Johnson Brings Surf, Song and Homecoming Spirit to the Santa Barbara Bowl
Santa Barbara, Calif. – October 7, 2026

It was a pleasure to see Jack Johnson at the Santa Barbara Bowl. The night paired a concert with his surf film, and the combination felt natural for an artist who has always straddled both worlds.

The setting added to it. The Bowl is an open-air amphitheater built in 1936 and nestled in the foothills of Santa Barbara. It was an ideal home for a performer whose music sounds best under the open sky.
A filmmaker’s roots
Johnson’s history with the city gives the evening extra meaning. He studied film at UC Santa Barbara, and that training shaped the work he is known for. Before he was a household name in music, he was a filmmaker with a deep love of the ocean. Seeing the surf film and the music together at the Bowl, a few miles from where he studied, felt like a full-circle moment.

The music
The concert was packed with his strongest and best-loved hits, and the crowd sang along from the first notes. He also mixed in songs many in the audience hadn’t heard before. The standouts were the love songs written for his wife, which were tender, unguarded and beautiful. They drew some of the quietest and most attentive moments of the night.
Another highlight came when G. Love joined him for several songs. His harmonica added texture and playfulness, and it lifted the show into something special.
The band
The musicians sharing the stage with Johnson were top-tier. They played with a relaxed precision that supported his songs without crowding them, and the chemistry on stage was easy to see.
Authentic, raw and kind
Johnson himself is the heart of the evening. He comes across as authentic, relatable, and kind. His lyrics return to love, friendship and nature, and the evening carried a strong sense of connection to the waves, the surf and the natural world. It was warm and communal, the kind of show people leave a little lighter and more connected to the human spirit than when they arrived.
